The Greater New Hope Baptist Church, at 816 8th St. NW, was founded in 1933. The church purchased this large downtown church building in 1953 for $150,000 from the Washington Hebrew Congregation.
The Washington Hebrew Congregation had originally moved to this location in 1863, purchasing an existing Methodist church. In 1897, having outgrown the space, they constructed a new building, designed by architects Louis F. Stutz and Frank W. Pease. President McKinley laid the cornerstone of the building.
