St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, at 600 M St. SW, is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. It was founded in 1961 and originally met in a nearby seafood restaurant. This building was built in 1965, designed by architect Alexander Cochran.
Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall was a member of the church, and in 2006 the church proposed adding a feast to the Lesser Feasts and Fasts, which was adopted at both the Diocesan and National church levels. The Feast Day of Blessed Thurgood is on May 17, the anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education.
