The Buchanan School, at 1325 D St. SE, was built in 1895. It was designed by the Office of the Building Inspector, in the Romanesque Revival style.
When the District no longer needed the school and the other buildings on the large property, it was sold to Walter Boek in 1998, with the highest bid of $1.5 million. Boek was a former professor, and used the school for the International Graduate University, a school that had only a few classes and students. The school has looked deserted for many years while Boek operated it, due to its very limited use, but Boek maintained the interior. The school did not have a teaching certificate and lost its tax exemption. Boek died in 2012. It is unclear what will happen to it.
