1419 R St. NW

The Hawarden apartment building was built in 1901 by architect George S. Cooper, in the Romanesque Revival style.  Its twin, the Gladstone, is next to it.  These two buildings were among the first apartment buildings to be aimed at middle-class residents.  The Hawarden is five-stories, with 20 apartments, now converted into condos.

It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
